I've brought a Witcher's Silver Sword, a sun rune and two earth runes to the blacksmith to forge a rune sword. Whirl is arguably the most powerful attack in the game, and it becomes a lot better with Severance +20% armor and attack power is really good, and the runes on your steel sword don't matter much anyway since humans are so squishy, so it's a good place for it. 
You also get a very nice Silver sword at the very end of chapter 4
Gwalhir is one of the best (if not the best) steel swords in the Enhanced Edition, so if you can buy that it will last to the end of the game. Imo it is well balanced but I want to see the 'extra' stats from the 3 moons. I havent tried the 3 Moon runes but atm I like my 2 moon 1 earth, it does +10% dmg +75% knockdown and a +30% dmg recieved from silver swords. Runes will be more plentiful in Ch.4 and other, more potent combinations become available, but yeah, upgrading then will warm the heart barely five minutes, since Aerondight is right behind the corner and impossible to miss. You get one Earth rune from Zoltan in Ch.2 as you progress through "The Memory of a Blade" quest, another can be picked as a reward from the Ch.3 fistfighting champion, and Thaler's shop inventory contains one sun rune.Īnd despite being the only rune combination you can etch into the sword before Chapter IV, it's actually worth doing it.
